Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
