Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
