Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
