Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
