Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
