Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
