Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
