Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
