Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
