Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
