Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
