Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
