Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
