Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
