Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
