Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
