Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
