Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
