Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
