Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
