Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
