Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
