Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
