Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
