Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
