Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
