Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
