Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
