Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
