Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
