Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
