Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
