Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
