Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
