Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
