Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
